Want to Learn More About ECHO?

ECHO-like cyberbullying happens when rumors turn into harmful online behavior. It may start with an innocent re-share, but misinformation, disinformation, or malinformation is never harmless. Soon you may start seeing similar posts and “information” that reinforce what you posted.  Spreading rumors and misinformation online can have real consequences.

What It Can Look Like

Reposting a sensational headline (click-bait style) post without actually reading the whole article.

Posting information that is an outright lie, but it's so outrageous it seems “funny”.

ECHO sees a post that may seem to good to be true, but reshares anyways

Types of ECHO content:

Misinformation: False or wrong information shared by mistake or due to a lack of knowledge, with no intent to cause harm.

Disinformation: False information created and spread on purpose to deceive, mislead, or cause harm.

Malinformation: True information taken out of context and shared deliberately to damage or manipulate someone

How to Stop the Echoing From Spreading

  • If you are triggered

Do not respond immediately. Put down the device, move away from the conversation and give yourself time to cool down.

Write the response without sending it, then read it again later. You may decide it does not need to be posted at all.

  • If someone is targeting you

Avoid engaging while emotions are high. Save screenshots, block or mute the person and tell a trusted adult.

Use the platform’s reporting tools when messages include harassment, threats or repeated unwanted contact.

  • If you see it happening

Do not like, share or add another comment. Supporting the target privately can be more helpful than joining the public argument.

Report harmful content and ask a trusted adult for help when the situation is serious.

Before You Post, Ask:

Am I reacting or responding?

Would I say this face to face?

Could this embarrass or hurt someone?

Will posting this solve anything?

Should I step away and ask for help?

A pause does not mean someone else wins. It means you stay in control.
